I must be living in some kind of treasure trove. Last time it was the viewfinder, and now this.
The other night I was talking to Min Wye post Cipher Launch (pictures here) about the LX3 when we came to the conclusion that the hot shoe on the LX3 meant that I would be able to make use of just about any flash unit with it. Don’t know why I didn’t realise this before, but I’ve had on lying around at home for the longest time. Well, after that discussion I had quite a lot more of the night to go through before getting home, so by the time I was home I’d totally forgotten about it again.
So I was just lounging around in the living room watching a documentary about ancient Rome on SBS when suddenly it came back to me. I jumped up and ran in to the room, rummaged through boxes and managed to find the flash unit, battery cover and pilfered 4 rechargable batteries from my emergency torch (hope the storms don’t come again).
As expected, it was easy to put together and I got it working without having to touch any of the camera settings, but it’s been a really really long time since I’ve used an external flash, so I think I’ll need to relearn a lot of stuff. Right now the pictures as you can see are still a little overexposed.
The LX3 is great fun indeed!

Think it could be the metering mode, (spot?) enclosed space and your dark colored shirt.
Or it could just be your monitor.

The thing is that the flash unit doesn’t sync with the camera directly.. it has to be manually adjusted. I’ve got the manual somewhere in my mess of a cupboard!

Hello Ed,
Glad you like my pictures!
I’ve actually always bought my cameras off eBay, with the exception of this LX3 which I found as a demonstrator at Harvey Norman.
It’s quite safe to buy online, but eBay sellers are often based overseas so it might be difficult when you want to make warranty claims.
If you use Google to look, you’ll be able to find Aussie internet stores that sell the LX3 (brand new) at very competitive prices. My friend actually ordered a brand new one from one of those stores for the same as what I paid at Harvey Norman!
